Pine, oak and cedar are why people live up here — and they are also why clearance matters. California asks for defensible space out to 100 feet around a home, in three zones. Bryan works those zones the way the inspectors read them.
- Zone 0 — the first 5 feet. Needles off the roof and out of the gutters, nothing combustible against the siding or under the deck.
- Zone 1 — 5 to 30 feet. Dead material out, ladder fuels broken up, low limbs raised, spacing opened between shrubs.
- Zone 2 — 30 to 100 feet. Grass knocked down, brush thinned, fallen limbs and needle build-up cleared out.
